This course is designed to give firearm owners the practical knowledge needed to properly care for, maintain, and securely store their firearms at home and while traveling in a vehicle. With great power comes great responsibility and owning a firearm comes with the responsibility of keeping it in safe, reliable condition while preventing unauthorized access.
This hands-on course covers routine firearm maintenance, cleaning and inspection, storage options, and practical considerations for securing firearms around the home and in vehicles. We’ll also discuss different holster options for men and women, off-body carry solutions, and practical considerations for carrying and securing a firearm while keeping it appropriately accessible.
Training includes:
Fundamental firearm safety procedures and safe handling during maintenance
Basic field stripping and reassembly of common firearm types
Proper cleaning, lubrication, and routine maintenance practices for different firearm types
Identifying common signs of excessive wear, damage, or potential maintenance concerns
Selecting appropriate firearm-cleaning tools, supplies, and equipment
Understanding different home-storage options, including safes, lockboxes, locking cabinets, and other security devices
Balancing secure storage with accessibility for defensive firearms
Preventing unauthorized access by children, guests, or other individuals
Vehicle firearm-storage options and considerations
Protecting firearms from theft, moisture, corrosion, and environmental damage
Developing responsible storage practices for everyday firearm ownership
Required Equipment: Students are encouraged to bring an unloaded firearm they would like to become more familiar with maintaining. Examples can also be made available for demonstration. Cleaning equipment may be brought to class or provided for demonstration. Specific equipment requirements and firearm-handling procedures can be discussed before the session.
